Surf info…
KRUI SOUTH SUMATRA, KARANG NYIMBOR, aka. UJUNG BOCUR
If you want uncrowded surf, Krui and Karang nyimbor(aka Ujung bocur, the most popular wave in south sumatra), are the best places i have found in Indo. Cool, mellow people go there. Many don’t surf that well or come from places that don’t have that good of surf, so crowds are mellow. Being from hawaii, I got as many waves as I could handle and it seems to rarely gets so flat that you can’t surf. However the down side of Krui is that there are many, many better quality waves all over indo. The water was uncomfortably warm for me sometimes, the warmest i have ever surfed in, and i did get sea lice bites out in the line-up a few times, really annoying, like 50 or so mosquito bites. And last but not least, not so many tubes compared to most indo waves, although there are other waves up and down the coast. At certain tides Karang Nymbor does barrel on the reef point, but pretty shallow. I hope this helps, krui is a great place to see normal indonesian lifestyle.
Living expenses:
Surfcamp Ombak Inda cost 200,000, 22$ per night with 3 meals a day. There are some new small camps openning next to the other established camp, that are probably cheaper but i don’thave contact info.
Hotel, Sampana Lima, was about 70,000 rupia, about 8$.
Transport per van or taxi from Lampung Airport, sumatra, to Krui about 800,000 rupia,90$.
Bus from Jakarta to Krui, 24 hours and about 20$ and no flight form jakarta to Bandar Lampung airport. Bemos, little soft top cargo vans with benches, run like buses, $.50 each trip. There is only one road, you just wait on the side and flag them down.
Good luck and don’t forget to save for traveling because it might save you.

I just had the best two months of surf of my life ! Unbelievable waves, no crowds and excellent accommodations and food, hard to believe they call this the off season. Super groovy staff, wanted to stay forever. Drew’s House and Karang Nyimbor Hotel are the best. Wish I could say the same about Bruce Macintyre, who cancelled my whole trip (last minute), what a clown! Luckily I found Dave at www.surfcampsumatra.com Thanks Dave, I’ll be back soon, love you…
PS: Thanks again, Andy, Ari, Asep and Tony… Ur the best
